Area of Expertise:

Economics of Education, Financial Education, Cooperative Financing, Social Finance

The realm of mathematics challenges one’s mind with sophisticated concepts and symbols, reflecting the beauty of abstract thought and the marvel of science in practice. In the vast field of mathematics, its application spans widely across the disciplines of science, economics, finance, and medicine, to name a few.

This article features Dr Syaza Nawwarah binti Zein Isma, a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya. She holds a PhD in Actuarial Science from the Australian National University (2022), a master's degree in Islamic Banking and Finance from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) (2014), and a bachelor's degree in actuarial science from Universiti Malaya (UM) (2011). Dr. Syaza’s experiences span teaching and research roles in economics, statistics, and finance, as well as administrative roles, including serving as the Actuarial Science Programme Coordinator. She collaborates with academic colleagues, industry experts, and policymakers to bridge the gap between theoretical research and real-world challenges, with a strong focus on generating insights that inform policy and practice.

“Surely with hardship comes ease. Surely with that hardship comes more ease.” (Surah Ash-Sharh 94:5-6). - This verse from the Qur’an inspires her to remain patient, grateful, and steadfast, knowing that every challenge is accompanied by ease.

Professional & Research Endeavours

Dr. Syaza’s research is shaped by her academic foundation in actuarial science and Islamic finance, with interests covering equitable finance, the economics of education, risk management, and financial mathematics. She views the completion of her PhD as a pivotal step that has strengthened and expanded her scholarly pursuits in these areas. She aspires to utilise her expertise to combine statistical and financial modelling with social science perspectives, especially in addressing pressing societal issues such as student loan repayment schemes and socioeconomic equity.

Driven by her passion for equitable economics and a sustainable financial system, Dr Syaza aims to apply these concepts to shape public policies that positively impact society. Aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Quality Education, Reduced Inequalities, and Decent Work and Economic Growth, Dr Syaza’s role as Project Leader in her ongoing research titled “Modelling Income-Contingent Loan Repayment Scheme for Malaysia Higher Education Student Financing” aims to design a fair and sustainable income-contingent loan (ICL) repayment model to fortify Malaysia’s higher education financing system. This research received a grant of RM43,400.00 under Universiti Malaya's “Bantuan Khas Penyelidikan” (BKP Special) from 15th December 2023 to 14th December 2025.

The Future of Education Loan Repayment Structures

ree

Through the analysis of income data across various financial and socio-demographic factors, the study projects future income distributions using finance and statistical methods, which allows for the understanding of how graduates’ incomes evolve, as well as how different repayment policies impact affordability in repayments and government funding sustainability.

The model serves as a decision-making tool for policymakers, providing evidence-based insights to model student loan repayment structures. Ultimately, this research seeks to support the development of a more equitable and efficient education financing framework, ensuring that repayment policies are aligned with Malaysia’s socio-economic context and long-term educational goals. Henceforth, Dr Syaza welcomes strategic partnerships with key stakeholders, policymakers, researchers, and industry experts that are crucial in ensuring that the proposed income-contingent loan repayment model is practical, data-driven, and contextually relevant.

“My research on income-contingent repayment focuses on designing a fairer and more sustainable student loan model for Malaysia, ensuring a balanced approach to repayment that supports both graduates and the education system- says Dr Syaza Nawwarah.”

Ultimately, reinforcing Dr Syaza’s driving motto – patience, gratitude, and steadfastness are catalysts to overcome challenges. She encourages future researchers to embrace continuous learning, nurturing curiosity, and passion that ultimately drive growth and discovery!
