UM Shines at ITEX 2025 with Multiple Award-Winning Innovations

The International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX) 2025, held from 29th to 31st May at KLCC, showcased groundbreaking technologies from global innovators. ITEX 2025 is pleased to present this year's illustrious honorees. The awards presented highlight Universiti Malaya's dedication to promoting innovation and achievement in several sectors and acknowledge its esteemed academic members' influential research and efforts.
UM researchers made an exceptional showing, securing four Gold medals, four Silver medals, and one Special award, reaffirming UM's leadership in research and innovation.
Projects and Winners of UM Awards:


ITEX is the world's leading technology trade event, where the latest discoveries and innovations are showcased to promote technical progress, address global issues, and shape the future.
The ITEX 2025 showcased numerous UM pioneering projects, each having a significant impact on its respective field. Dr Muhamad Fazly Abdul Patah from the Faculty of Engineering wins the Gold Medal and the Henry Goh Award for Best Invention - Environment for his innovative LiquePro Technology. LiquePro Technology is an innovative leader in sustainable waste management solutions, specialiSing in the conversion of plastic waste into high-quality liquid fuels.
Dr Tang Swee Seong from the Faculty of Science was honoured with the Gold Medal for his invention, "AquaPhage: Microcapsules Containing Bacteriophages for a Sustainable Infection Treatment in Aquaculture".
AquaPhage is a sustainable innovation designed to address bacterial infections in aquaculture without the use of antibiotics. The core technology involves encapsulating a cocktail of bacteriophages, natural viruses that target harmful bacteria, within biodegradable alginate microcapsules derived from brown algae.
Additionally, Dr Muhammad Imran Ramli from the Faculty of Engineering was recognised with a Gold Medal for his project, entitled "Measurement of Respiratory Muscle Performance During Singing Using Muscle Vibration Sensor in People with Spinal Cord Injury." He developed a clinical guideline for comparing accessory respiratory muscle function (sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and rectus abdominis (RA)) during singing therapy in the SCI population, utilizing mechanomyography (MMG).
Another Gold Medal winner, Dr Mohd Razip Bajuri, from the Faculty of Education, received the award for his project, "MR-2D Geo Kit." The MR-2D Geo Kit is specifically designed to encourage students to develop their understanding of geometric concepts through interactive learning tools.
Professor Dr Mohd Rafie Johan from the Nanotechnology and Catalysis Research Center (NANOCAT) was honoured with a Silver Medal for his team's project, called "7 in 1 Halal PCR Test Kit". Dr Effariza Hanafi from the Faculty of Engineering received a Silver Medal for the project "Smart Manhole: Ensuring Worker Safety and Efficient Sewer Management." Dr Syazreen Nadia Sulaiman, a member of the Chemistry Department of Pusat Asasi Sains (PASUM), was awarded a Silver Medal for her team effort titled "ARChem: Visualizing Orbitals in Augmented Reality." Dr Yong Adilah Shamsul Haruman from the Faculty of Built Environment was also awarded a Silver Medal for her project called "Hentian Komuniti Mobile Applications."


ITEX 2025 highlighted UM's commitment to addressing global challenges through cutting-edge research. These accolades underscore the dedication of our researchers to advancing sustainability, healthcare, education, and innovative technologies.
