Shaping the Future of Sustainable Energy
Researcher: Professor Dr. Ramesh T. Subramaniam

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. - African proverb
Green and clean - a simple way to regard the future of energy, is not as plain as it seems. Behind the scenes of decarbonisation and sustainable energy represent grit, growth, and determination exuberated by scientists and engineers. From eco-friendly electrodes to the development of sustainable energy storage using bio-based materials, this article proudly introduces Professor Dr. Ramesh T. Subramaniam, a distinguished pioneer and contributor in the field of materials science.
Introduction
Professor Dr. Ramesh T. Subramaniam is a distinguished Malaysian material scientist and academic based at the Universiti Malaya (UM), recognised for his pioneering contributions to energy storage, green materials, and sustainable technologies. He is currently a Senior Professor in the Department of Physics at UM, where he has also held key leadership roles, including the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science and involvement in major research clusters. Prof Ramesh also now serves as the Dean of the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS).
Prof. Dr. Ramesh completed his Bachelor of Science with Honours at UM in 1997, and later earned his Master of Technology in Materials Science in 1999 and a Ph.D. in Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology in 2004. His academic journey laid the foundation for a career centered on developing innovative materials in addressing pertinent global energy and environmental challenges.
Career and Global Scholastic Recognitions
Prof. Dr. Ramesh is widely recognised for his research on advanced functional materials – highly adhesive polymer membranes, self-healing hydrogel electrolytes, and green polymer-based systems derived from natural resources. These innovations have practical applications in energy storage technologies such as batteries, supercapacitors, and renewable energy devices that are high-performance, with an environmentally conscious design.

Throughout the years, Prof. Dr. Ramesh’s scholastic reputation has earned him numerous prestigious international and national awards, including the Pachifichem Young Scholar Award from the American Chemical Society, the Young Scientist Award from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), and the Established Scientist Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry. He was also honoured with the ASEAN-China Scholar Award and the Malaysia Toray Science Foundation Science and Technology Award.
In addition, Prof Ramesh was also elected as a Fellow of prominent organisations – The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) and the International Science Council (ISC). He was also the first Malaysian to be elected as a The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Fellow in the field of Physics, Astronomy, and Space Sciences. His research contributions have also earned him a place among Stanford University’s list of the world’s top 2% scientists based on Career-Long Citation Impact.
