UM Researcher's AI Research Shines: 2nd Prize at SRIE 2023 R&D Competition

Universiti Malaya researcher takes the call on AI-based research to win second place in R&D Competition organised during the 4th Selangor R&D and Innovation Expo 2023 (SRIE 2023) at KLCC from 19 - 22 October 2023.

“It is the way forward. We do not have enough talent. If we want to grow into an AI-savvy nation, we need talent,” said Science, Technology & Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang during the AI Unplugged Conference organised by the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) in KL on Aug 10 (Source: The Star Online, 14 Aug 2023).

Universiti Malaya, being a premier university in Malaysia, has taken up on the challenge of nurturing talents in AI. Professor Ir. Dr. Harikrishnan Ramiah and the team from the Faculty of Engineering won second place in the Research & Development (R&D) competition organised during the 4th Selangor R&D and Innovation Expo 2023 for his project titled Location Accuracy Optimization in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE5.1) based Indoor Positioning System (IPS)-A Machine Learning Approach.

In Prof. Ir. Dr. Harikrishnan's own words on what prompted his research interest, " Our industry partner has lost approximately RM337k in total to replace missing assets over the past 10 years time.

To mitigate the occurrence of missing assets, an asset tracking system must be implemented in the cleanroom facility.

This study presents an Asset Tracking System which uses an Indoor Positioning System (IPS) with improved location accuracy that has been developed, implemented and successfully operational at our industry partner manufacturing cleanroom."

The Selangor R&D and Innovation Expo 2023 (SRIE 2023) hosted by Selangor is an annual event that brings together visionaries, researchers, entrepreneurs, funders and industry experts from around the region held in conjunction with the Selangor International Business Summit 2023 (SIBS 2023).

The event showcased the forefront of research, breakthrough ideas, and technological advancements in Malaysia’s most advanced state. As an important event in research and innovation, SRIE 2023 provides a dynamic platform for showcasing the incredible advancements made in the field. SRIE 2023, themed Embracing Disruption, Capitalizing Change, aimed to encourage direct peer engagement for high-level deal-making, co-investments, strategic partnerships and business networking while solidifying the Golden State’s position in the global world of innovations.

This year UM hosted five (5) multifaceted projects along with Prof. Ir. Dr. Harikrishan’s AI project, namely Prof. Dr. Mohd Rafie Johan (Nanotechnology Catalysis and Research Centre - NANOCAT) on the project titled “7 in 1 halal PCR kit – a kit for detecting multiple targets in a food”, Prof. Dr. Fung Shin Yee (Faculty of Medicine) on “Pioneering Innovations in Medicinal Mushroom Research”, Prof. Dr. Ramesh T. Subramaniam (Faculty of Science) on “Smart energy storage for green transportation e-vehicles”, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adina binti Abdullah (Faculty of Medicine) on “Kiosk Kesihatan Digital Dengan Aplikasi Saringan Kesihatan Ke Arah Kesejahteraan Pekerja Lelaki B40”.
